The Town of Riverhead Alternate Transportation Committee asked Spirit Ironworks to design and build a decorative archway and gate for a busy alleyway. This alleyway is located on Main Street. The goal of this project was to block off the alleyway to traffic while promoting a visually interesting downtown that encourages pedestrian traffic. This archway was inspired by the Art Deco façade of the historic Suffolk Theater. We chose to incorporate a fan shaped grille consisting of scroll-work and brass repoussé scallop shells. The steel horizontal bar was hot forged in a 100-ton screw press to give it a corrugated texture that referenced the tile work on the pediment. Hand forged cane bolts and latch pulls were also created for the arch as off the shelf components are much less appealing and not robust enough for this type of commercial structure.
