Promenade of the Arts Archway fabricated by Spirit Ironworks, Inc.

The Promenade to the Arts archway was officially installed in the Roe Walkway, between Stanley’s and Toast and behind Main Street in Patchogue Village this past December.

“The arch is aptly named the Promenade of the Arts,” said CDA executive director Marian Russo, explaining that it leads to the murals along the Roe Walkway, the Terry Street parking lot crosswalk embellished with paver art leading to MoCA L.I. and Plaza Mac. “It is another example of collaborative funding of projects.”

Spirit Ironworks created the piece, which was installed with anchor bolts at a total cost of $1,688. The project was funded by a Suffolk County Downtown Revitalization Grant and the Village of Patchogue CDA also used a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds for the engineering and installation.

The design was created by Rachel Miller of Spirit Ironworks. Rachel and Tim Miller, from Spirit Iron Works in Bayport, are known for their elaborate metal designs, including the Bellport Village sailboat sculpture and the Staudinger Walkway arch on Main Street in Patchogue.

The new piece is stylistically different from the first Main Street archway and features a paintbrush, geometric shapes and rulers, in honor of the old Roe tape factory. Also, the light post pictured in the left of the photo is to be removed for a better view of the new arch.

The Roe Walkway received funding to install the original archway in 2016, and extension work with pavers and lighting the following year in 2017. The walkway itself was renovated in 2008. A Suffolk County grant and CDA funds allowed for a complete $200,000 revamp of the alley to ensure safety.

Additional possible future locations for archways include the Patchogue Theatre for Performing Arts walkway, the post office and laundromat, and possibly the Bank of America walkway, depending on Tritec’s participation.
